We want to enjoy our inflatable toys as long as possible. However, they can be prone to punctures or leaks, which is frustrating. Luckily, repairing an inflatable is a fairly simple process that can be done at home with the right tools and materials. In this blog, we'll walk you through the steps of repairing an inflatable so that you can get back to having fun in no time!
Step 1: Locate the Leak
The first step in repairing an inflatable is to locate the leak. This can be done by inflating the inflatable and then submerging it in water. Look for bubbles coming out of the inflatable, which will indicate the location of the leak. If the leak is not easily visible or your inflatable is too big, you can use a solution of water and dish soap to help locate it. Apply the solution to the inflatable and look for bubbles forming at the site of the leak.
Step 2: Clean the Area
Once you've located the leak, it's important to clean the area around it. Use a clean cloth to wipe away any dirt use an alcohol-based cleaner to thoroughly clean the area. This will ensure that the repair patch will adhere properly.
Step 3: Choose your adhesive
Choosing the right glue is essential when repairing your inflatable. Not all glues are suitable for use on inflatables, as some may not provide a strong enough bond or may even damage the material. It's important to choose a glue that is specifically designed for use on inflatables, such as a vinyl adhesive. Look for a glue that is waterproof, dries clear, and has a strong hold. We recommend to use glue for soft PVC (vinyl cement or polyurethane based). Additionally, follow the instructions on the glue carefully to ensure that it is applied properly and that the repair is successful.
Step 4: Apply the Patch
Next, you'll need to apply the patch to the area around the leak. Almost all of our products come with a color coded repair patch, so you don’t have to worry about the visibility of the patch! In case you don’t have one, you could purchase an inflatable repair patch kit from your local outdoor store, which will include a patch and adhesive or get one of our repair patches, made out of super soft PVC that we use for our products. Cut a piece of the repair patch large enough to overlap the damaged area by approximately 1.5 cm (1/2”). Round off the edges and place the patch on the damaged area and press down firmly. You may want to use a weight on top to keep it in place.
Using the patch for a ripped seam instead of a leak? Then you can glue the patch behind the tear, inside your inflatable toy. This way you won't see the patch when your toy is inflated again.
Step 5: Allow the Adhesive to Dry
Once the patch is in place, you'll need to allow the adhesive to dry completely. This may take several hours, depending on the type of adhesive you are using. It's important to avoid using the inflatable until the adhesive is completely dry, as this could cause the patch to come loose. Wait at least 1 hour before inflating again.
Step 6: Test the Inflatable
Once the adhesive is dry, it's time to test the inflatable to make sure that the repair was successful. Inflate your toy and check for any leaks. If there are still leaks, you may need to repeat the repair process or seek the help of a professional.
